Sasanian Empire. Shapur II the Great (309-379). AR Drachm. (4.01g/ 25mm). Crowned bust of Shapur to right, inscription around/ Flaming fire altar between two crowned attendants, head of Shapur on top of altar to right. Very fine. Shapur II is known as one of the greatest Sasanian kings. He was declared king while in his mothers womb, which accounts for his extraordinarily long reign and his mother’s (Ifra Hormiz the wife of Hormizd II) considerable influence at the royal court.
