Description
Hunnic Tribes, Hephthalites . Anonymous ( Circa 6th century AD). AR Drachm. (3.40g/ 27mm). Sasanian style bust right, imitating the winged headdress type of Peroz; four pellets in margin/ Fire altar with attendants, star and crescent flanking flames; Bactrian “BoXlo” for Balkh to right, Pahlavi “M” to left. Göbl, Dok. Em. 287. Extremely fine, cabinet patina. Extremely rare. Following the defeat and death of Peroz I at the hands of the Hephthalites, his widely recognised coin type was adopted by Hunnic rulers. The continued use of his bust reflects both the need for trusted currency in circulation and the appropriation of Sasanian imperial authority.
