a greek/eastern mediterranean amethyst owl, circa 4th–3rd century b.c. carved from deep purple amethyst, the bird is depicted standing frontally, with large rounded eyes, a pointed beak, and raised ear tufts. the breast and wings are adorned with deeply incised feathers arranged in overlapping rows. the translucent stone ranges from dark violet to brighter purple along the edges and thinner areas, with natural inclusions and surface accretions throughout. the eyes feature pale circular surrounds with dark central pupils, creating a striking frontal expression. minor chips and losses, particularly around the ears, feet, and edges, are consistent with age.
