NGC offers more than one way to submit a coin. Each way is called a tier. A tier sets three things: the fee, the highest value you can declare, and how quickly the coin comes back. Choose the wrong one and you either overpay or have to resubmit.
This guide explains each tier in plain English. Prices are the current ones on our NGC submission form, per coin, VAT included.

The cheapest option. For modern coins only, not ancient or older world coins.
Economy
Lowest fee for older and ancient coins. Best when you are not in a hurry.
Standard
The everyday choice for coins worth more than £250.
Gold
Same fee as Standard with a higher value cap. Ask us whether it suits your coin.
Express
A faster route for time-sensitive coins, such as before an auction deadline.
WalkThrough
Priority handling for high-value or urgent coins.
Above £20,000 you need Unlimited WalkThrough. It costs £360 plus 1.2% of the coin's fair market value for world coins, or £480 plus 2.4% for ancient coins.

Each form also carries a £13.20 handling fee, shared across the coins on it. Return shipping is extra. Tiers and limits can change, so we confirm the current ones before you submit.

Step 3How to declare the value
You declare a value for each coin on the form. That figure decides which tier the coin can enter. It also sets the insurance cover while the coin is in transit.
Do not underdeclare
A low figure keeps you in a cheaper tier, but it can leave the coin under-insured. NGC may also ask for the form to be corrected.
Do not overdeclare
A high figure can push you into a more expensive tier than you need. Base the number on recent sales of similar coins in similar condition.

Step 4Common mistakes
- Choosing Economy for a coin worth more than £250. It will not qualify and will be moved up.
- Paying for Express with no deadline. If you are not selling soon, the faster tier adds cost and no benefit.
- Using Modern for an older coin. The Modern tier is only for coins from 1965 onwards.
- Grading a coin that is not worth it. Check the break-even first, as covered in our guide to whether grading is worth it.

What is the cheapest NGC tier?
Modern is the cheapest at £23 per coin, for coins from 1965 onwards. For older and ancient coins, Economy at £27 is the lowest fee.
What is the difference between Economy and Standard?
Economy costs £27 and covers coins valued up to £250. Standard costs £50 and covers coins up to £2,500.
What is NGC WalkThrough?
WalkThrough is a premium service for high-value or urgent coins. It covers coins up to £20,000, with higher fees than the standard tiers.
How long does NGC grading take?
It varies by tier and workload. NGC publishes estimates for each tier. Standard tiers are generally slower, and Express and WalkThrough are the faster options.
