Cappadocia. Ariobarzanes I Philoromaios (96-63 BC). AR Mule error Drachm (3.84g/ 16mm). Diademed head of Ariobarzanes I to right/ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΡΙΑΡΑΘOV EΠIΦANOYΣ, Athena Nikephoros standing to left, holding spear and shield; monogram to outer left. A remarkable and highly unusual Cappadocian mule, combining an obverse die of Ariobarzanes I Philoromaios with a reverse die originally intended for an issue of a king named Ariarathes. This exceptional mismatched pairing was probably produced through the reuse of an earlier reverse die during a period of dynastic transition.
