Turkey Liyakat Madalyasi (Medal of Merit) (5.02g/ 24mm). AH 1308. Translating literally to “Medal of Merit,” the Liyakat Medal reflected its purpose as a broad recognition of achievement. Created in 1890, it served as the core military honor for the Ottoman Empire through World War I, though it was also presented to civilians for notable contributions to society. A 1905 update enabled women to earn the award for philanthropic efforts, educational support, and religious service. Uniquely, the medal could be passed down through a recipient’s family, with heirs permitted to wear it if officially authorized. Measuring just 25 mm across, the medal was produced in gold and silver, hanging from a red ribbon bordered with thin green stripes. Its front featured the Ottoman coat of arms under the Sultan’s royal cypher, while the back displayed an inscription honoring loyalty and bravery alongside its 1890 creation date. Recipients honored during the First World War received a ribbon clasp featuring crossed sabers marked with the year 1915, crafted from the same metal as their medal.. Holed as made, very fine.
