Lot 264:
Afsharid. Zand. Nadir Shah (1736-1747)/ Karim Khan (1751-1779). AR Rupee. Tabriz. AH 1150. Countermarked KARIM
Description
Afsharid. Zand. Nadir Shah (1736-1747)/ Karim Khan (1751-1779). AR Rupee. (11.12g/ 20mm). Tabriz. AH 1150. Album-. Very fine. The coin bears a later countermark on the reverse reading “کریم” (Karim) in Persian. This countermark was most probably applied during the post-Afsharid transitional period, possibly in connection with circulation under Karim Khan Zand (r. 1751–1779), when earlier silver issues continued to circulate and were occasionally revalidated. Alternatively, the mark may represent a regional merchant or sarraf verification punch, a common practice in the Persian and Indian monetary sphere to confirm silver content and authenticity. Extremely rare, possibly unique.
