Description

Parthian Empire. Pakoros I (Circa AD 78-120 AD). AR Drachm (3.42g/18mm). Diademed bust left, wearing longer, pointed, beard / Archer seated right on throne, holding bow; monogram below bow.. Extremely fine. Extremely rare.

The face of a man is engraved on this coin, yet to this day we know absolutely nothing about him. This coin is extremely rare and unique from every perspective. The issuer has tried to claim that the portrait resembles Pakoros the Younger (Series S78). The reverse of the coin is even more interesting; First, the Arsacid title Aršak (APSΛKOY) on the right side of the coin has been completely removed and replaced with a dot.  The issuer of this coin certainly did not want (or was not permitted) to use the official Arsacid title. Second, although we see the monogram ‘A’ beneath the bow of the archer, this coin was never minted at the Ecbatana mint.
