Fatimid Gold Biconical Bead. Egypt. Ca 10th Century
Description
Fatimid Gold Biconical Bead. Egypt. Ca 10th Century. Expertly crafted from high-purity gold, this refined biconical bead is made using openwork filigree composed of delicate scrolling tendrils arranged in a balanced vegetal pattern. Its wirework incorporates tight spirals and granulated motifs set in concentric bands, giving the surface a rich texture and harmonious three-dimensional form. The hollow bead is joined at the centre by a slim ribbed collar, with round openings at each end for threading.
The piece reflects the exceptional skill of Fatimid goldsmiths, whose jewellery—renowned throughout the Mediterranean—demonstrated unparalleled command of filigree and granulation. Beads such as this were likely components of necklaces or ceremonial ornaments, embodying the opulence and courtly elegance of 10th-century Egypt during the Fatimid Caliphate.
