Description

A Byzantine gold icon showing two crusader figures, circa 7th century A.D.

Formed from a thin sheet of high-purity gold, this rectangular plaque is delicately engraved with two standing warrior saints. Each figure is shown in military dress with a cloak, short tunic, and round shield, their haloes marked by double incised lines. They hold long spears and stand symmetrically on either side of a stylised tree. Faint Greek inscriptions can be seen in the lower panel, enclosed by a narrow raised border. The surface shows gentle rippling and subtle folds from the hammering process, along with small corner perforations for suspension, and a light, ancient patina.
The reverse is undecorated, preserving hammering impressions and minor wear consistent with historical use or attachment to a reliquary or sacred object.
Such gold devotional plaques served as personal or liturgical amulets, believed to offer divine protection. The pairing of warrior saints reflects Byzantine reverence for military holy figures as protectors of the faithful, representing both spiritual strength and imperial authority.
